Nancy–Ellen Churchville, artist, sculptor, poet and author, is a native of Philadelphia, PA, and has been painting, drawing and storytelling since childhood. She received her formal fine arts education at the Pennsylvania State University. She considers her work in all media to be inspired because she is compelled to create art that is alive through the expression of feeling and emotion that is captured in a moment of time.

Nancy-Ellen published her first novel, Nana’s Wicker Back, in 2009. It is a provocative tale of one lost woman who is commissioned by her ancestors to settle a serious matter that has haunted their family for generations. After having published the book, she was driven to sculpt some of its characters. Also, she was drawn to reading about the African Middle Passage and to creating ceramic pieces that memorialize the lives of women whom her heart seems to know endured that maelstrom.
